When it comes to travel, sometimes it’s good to know what other people are seeing and experiencing on their adventures, to help give you an idea of what a destination has to offer. We love fun travel facts here at JetRadar, so we’ve worked to put together these infographics picturing the most searched for sights and cities across Thailand, one of the most popular countries in the world for tourists. Collecting 3,000,000 unique searches from both foreigners and Thai people, these two infographics show what the locals and travelers are getting up to in this beautiful country.

As you will see from the pictures, there are a number of similarities and differences between the things we’ve discovered. Both travelers and Thais generally agree on the popular cities, like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, just not perhaps in exactly the same order. It’s interesting to see that while foreigners search for Bangkok the most — which isn’t surprising considering it’s the capital and one of the liveliest cities in the country — Thai users are searching for Chang Mai more often. We can see that Phuket ranks higher for foreigners than it does for Thai people, and places like Hat Yai are searched for more often by locals, whereas it only makes up a relatively small portion of foreign searches.

A fascinating conclusion can be drawn from these results; they show the way in which foreigners see Thailand, as opposed to how locals see it. Foreigners are still drawn to the beaten path in Thailand, its legendary triumphs. On the other hand, we can see that Thai people are interested in the more obscure places. Therefore, these infographics could offer tourists some key local recommendations.

It’s also worth noting the attractions we’ve added along with the cities, and how these compare between each infographic. Many of the top sights in the infographic drawn up from foreign searches are iconic Thailand — its white beaches, chaotic markets, and dazzling islands. However, the Thai version highlights many of Thailand’s beautiful temples, offering some different attractions for travelers to the country to visit.

Our infographics show a fascinating diversity in the way locals and tourists view Thailand, giving travelers to this country some more options for the best things to do and see here.
